YouTube Partner Program in Africa: check the country and the entry level

YouTube eligibility involves more than reaching a subscriber target. A creator needs to identify the right country list, the relevant level of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and the requirements shown for their channel. This guide is checked as of 24 October 2026, with an announced future change separated below.
The current advertising revenue threshold
The current route requires 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours over 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days. Shorts-feed watch time does not count toward the watch-hour route. Country availability, policy compliance, account-security and account-setup requirements also apply. Reaching the numbers permits an application, not automatic approval. Check YouTube’s current YPP overview and your Studio Earn tab.
These qualified metrics concern qualifying public content, not every view displayed elsewhere. Before applying, use that official checklist to review strikes, two-step verification, advanced-features access and AdSense for YouTube setup. Keep the channel’s identity and the intended payee accurate. Do not buy subscribers or create artificial viewing activity to meet a target.
The expanded tier is a different entry point
In participating countries, expanded YPP begins at 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in 90 days and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or three million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. It gives earlier access to eligible fan-funding and Shopping features, not automatic advertising revenue sharing. Each feature has its own conditions. See expanded YPP requirements.
This distinction matters when a headline says a creator can “monetize with 500 subscribers”. Ask which feature, in which country, and with which additional requirements. Do not budget for advertising revenue from that headline alone.
Selected Central and West African country checks
On the check date, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal appear on the standard YPP availability list. Nigeria and Senegal also appear on the separate expanded list; Ghana does not.
Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Guinea, Chad and the Central African Republic were not listed on either of those two pages at this review. This is a dated check of selected countries, not a permanent statement or a complete list of Africa.
Open the live official lists before making a decision. A country appearing in general AdSense availability or a payment-method table does not establish YPP availability. Those pages answer different questions.
A practical example
Illustrative example: a creator living in Ghana has 650 subscribers, four public uploads within 90 days and 3,200 qualified watch hours within 12 months. Those figures resemble the expanded-tier targets, but Ghana is not on that tier’s list at this check. The creator should not assume the lower entry route is available.
They can continue developing original work, review the channel’s Earn tab and recheck the official list. Using a relative’s address in another country would not be an honest solution. A service company or an MCN should not be presented as a way around the country requirement.
Announced change to recheck before 2027
Google announced changes in August 2026. Its official FAQ says new ad-revenue applicants will need 8,000 qualified watch hours over 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days, still with 1,000 subscribers, from 1 February 2027. It also describes updated terms due by 31 January and additional Shorts rules. These are forthcoming rules, not today’s thresholds. Read the full notice for your channel before relying on this guide after that date.
Keep the next step realistic
Record your country, the feature you want, the date checked and the missing criteria shown in Studio. Build a sustainable production plan around content you can make well, not a promised date of admission or an assumed income per view.
