What makes up the total cost of sending a parcel?

The cost of sending a parcel can extend beyond the amount displayed for transport. Packaging, getting to the handover and the receiver’s collection journey may all affect the money your household spends. A useful comparison makes those costs visible without treating every possible expense as a charge from the delivery platform.

Use the blank worksheet below for each option you are considering. It contains no ikWik tariff or example quote. Fill it with amounts from current offers, your own travel costs and information from the relevant providers. Keep unknown amounts visible until you can confirm them.

Compare the same parcel and the same outcome

Start with a single description that you use for every enquiry: contents, packed dimensions, packed weight, origin, destination and required collection arrangements. Changing the parcel or the endpoint changes the comparison. A price ending at a pickup point cannot be compared fairly with a home-delivery offer without considering the final collection journey.

Record the date of each quote and any validity condition. Check whether the offer still applies if you change the parcel, route or arrangements. Keep a copy of what is included so that a later total does not depend on memory. Do not enter an estimated cost as a confirmed provider charge.

Separate the delivery quote from other spending

The quoted transport amount belongs on its own line. Read its inclusions before adding anything else: if a stated service charge is already included, adding it again would overstate the total. If the price breakdown is unclear, ask what the displayed total covers and what remains payable elsewhere.

For each money line, record the amount, currency, payer and evidence. Mark “not applicable” where you have checked that a line does not apply. A blank line means unfinished research, not a zero. If a cost is already paid, note that fact so you can distinguish the complete cost from the money still needed.

Account for both people’s journeys

Imagine a fictional sender choosing between a handover near home and a lower transport quote across town. The second option may require a separate round trip. Add the actual travel cost before deciding. If the sender can combine the handover with an existing trip, record only the additional cash cost attributable to it.

Repeat the check with the receiver. A collection point may involve transport or someone else’s help. Decide together who will pay. Keep time and inconvenience in a separate note rather than inventing a monetary value for them. An option can be affordable in cash but impractical during working hours.

Keep currencies and payment methods clear

If quotes use different currencies, choose one currency for comparison and record the conversion source and date. A planning conversion is an estimate; the actual payment amount and any provider charge are what matter at checkout. Do not count the same conversion cost once in the rate and again as a separate fee.

This worksheet does not calculate customs liability or establish permission to transport an item.

A backup plan also needs its own note. Possible extra travel, alternative transport or a return may matter if arrangements change, but do not automatically add every scenario to the planned total. Record the trigger, the applicable conditions and who would decide. Do not subtract an expected refund before its eligibility and amount are confirmed.

Choose with the unresolved costs in view

Compare the confirmed totals alongside the remaining unknowns and practical constraints. If a missing amount could change your decision, resolve it before committing. Keep your completed worksheet with the quote and update it if the arrangement changes.
